Description
From the "Story of Palo Duro Canyon" by Duane Guy:
There are many of these forms, also called balanced rocks or hoodoos, scattered throughout the canyon.
In Palo Duro Canyon, blocks of sandstone in the Upper Trujillo layer come to rest on the softer mudstones of the Trujillo and Techovas below, erosion lowers the surface around the resistant boulder but does not attack as vigerously as the softer rock beneath it. As erosion progresses, the surface of the surrounding slope drops farther and farther below the resistant rock (or capstone) which typically is tilted at the angle surface of the slope.
