The stars circle Polaris (the North Star) in only a few hours each night. The petrified log lay entombed under many feet of soil and water for millions of years, only to begin a slow descent down the mesa over millions of more years as the soils below it erode.
This image was shot during my tenure as resident artist in the "Artist in Residence" program at Petrified Forest National Park.
