Description
Florence's Duomo, a Gothic Cathedral, was built in the middle ages (1296) but left unfinished by the architects. They had no idea how to build the huge dome for the church that dominated the landscape then (and now).
It sat open for 200 years, till Brunelleschi came along with ideas of how to finish the building. An engineering and architectural marvel, the dome continues to be a source of civic and religious pride for Florentines.
